A Lodi City Council candidate and Stockton business owner was arrested Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of money laundering, conspiracy and maintaining illegal gambling premises, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office.

Shakir Khan's arrest comes after the Sheriff's Office allegedly found that the American Smokers Club on Waterloo Road in central Stockton was the location of an illegal online gambling operation, department spokeswoman Sandra Mendez said.

A search warrant was served at the establishment last month, Mendez said. During the investigation, authorities discovered Khan to be the club's owner.

The 31-year-old Lodi City Council district 4 candidate initially attempted to convince authorities that he was not the facility's owner, Mendez said.

Last month's search warrant was part of a larger investigation into numerous illegal internet gambling establishments — also known as 'click-its' — operating within the city of Stockton, Mendez said.

'We have done quite a few arrests based on these types of illegal facilities,” Mendez said, adding that these establishments often operate like small casinos and utilize different types of devices to facilitate the gambling. 'The front is usually a store or a house and the back is used for illegal gambling.'

Khan is being held at the San Joaquin County Jail on $225,000 bail, online jail records show. He is due back in court at 12:15 p.m. on Friday in Lodi.
